Bus Safety
School Buses Are Safe To Use
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), students who use school buses are 7 times safer than those who go by private car, 31 times safer than those who walk and 228 times safer than those who cycle.
Bus Safety Tips
- Check the route number of the bus you want to catch.
- When the bus approaches, signal to the driver that you are there.
- Have your bus pass or the correct fare ready.
- Wait until the bus has completely stopped before hopping on or off.
- Get on the bus in single file.
- Find a seat quickly and sit in it quietly. Keep your school bag on your lap or put it under the seat. Don't leave your bag where people can trip over it.
- Keep the aisles clear.
- Stay in your seat at all times.
- Talk quietly.
- Never put your head, arms or anything else out the window.
- Always stay where the driver can see you.
- Don't cross the road until the driver says it is safe.
- Don't distract the driver by talking to them while the bus is moving.
- Don't stand in front of the yellow line - you may block the driver's view of the traffic.
- Don't ride on the steps. If you have to stand in the aisle, face the front of the bus and hold on tightly to the bars.
- If there are adults standing, you are expected to offer them your seat.
- Don't damage the bus. Repairs cost a lot of money and your parents will have to pay for them if you get caught.
- Stay out of the School Bus Danger Zone - the area 10 feet from the bus on all sides.
