Driver Authority

To obtain a Public Passenger Vehicle Driver Authority you need to read and understand the conditions and procedures outlined in the Driver Authority Application Information manual (available on request).

You are required to:

• Have completed and signed the Driver Authority Application for a Public Passenger Vehicle and attached all of the documents requested.
• Have had a health assessment performed by a medical practitioner, and completed the Health Assessment Form .
• Have satisfied the Director-General that you are of good repute and in all other respects a fit and proper person to be the driver of a public passenger vehicle AND
• Have sufficient responsibility and aptitude to drive a public passenger vehicle in accordance with law and custom.

Bus Driver Authority Training Courses are available through accredited training organisations.

The NSW Bus and Coach Association training course content is currently being reviewed by the BCA so details cannot be confirmed. As at August 2003, the approximate cost to undertake the program is $200. The program will take between 6-8 hours to complete.

The new program is broken up into 5 sections, which are:

• Legislation and DA
• Customer Service
• Vehicle Operations
• Managing Breakdowns and Emergencies
• Driver Welfare and Safety

A multiple choice assessment is to be completed for each section.

Training is provided by authorised DA trainers, and there are about 180 active trainers across the State.

Driver Authority applicants who successfully complete this course will be provided with a certificate which can be used to support an application for a Driver Authority.
